APALS® Acquired By Winged Systems Corporation

Autonomous Precision Approach System targets civil operations at secondary and unimproved airports.

October 15, 1998 -- Winged Systems Corporation announced today that it has acquired the Autonomous Precision Approach and Landing System (APALS®)  and is actively targeting the all-on-the-aircraft precision approach system at civil operations at secondary and unimproved airports throughout the world.

APALS utilizes the concept of Radar Pilotage™ to provide precision approach capbilities at any airport with requiring ground or satellite support.  Using only on-board sensors, APALS can create a standard Cat III ILS infrastructure including the glideslope, localizer, co-located DME, and marker beacons.  These can drive existing aircraft avionics to Cat I precision approach minimia and with advanced situational awareness displays are planned to provide Cat IIIa or better minima at Cat I facilities.

The APALS Radar Pilotage concept uses weather radar frequencies to penetrate weather and return a radar map of the area.  APALS correlates this to an on-board map of known features and determines position with respect to the runway threshold, including altitude, of one and a half meters.  The system has been flight tested at 5 geographically diverse airports and over 150 approaches in both nominal and severe (snow and ice) conditions.  The self-validating architecture of APALS enables both initial and long term certification of its database for Cat III operations.  Since the entire navigation capability is carried on-board the aircraft, it allows Cat I precision operations to be conducted at  any instrument marked runway without additional ground infrastructure.  This capability is being initially targeted at business and regional airlines which often have to operate out of airfields only supporting non-precision approaches.

Winged Systems Corporation is headquartered in Caldwell, Texas.  It was formed with the primary purpose of bringing APALS capabilities to civil aviation and can be reached at (979)567-6370, info@wingsys.com, and www.wingsys.com.
